Next up is how I draw the dirt and grass…

Always gotta start with the undermost part, the dirt base. Keep color scheme simple for this, otherwise you start putting in too much work! Blending is pretty minimal here. The dirt brush actually fakes some of the blending so it’s hardly necessary at all!.

When going over the grass, I try to keep to the same brushstrokes as before. Making new strokes with the lighter tone would require me to go and edge in the darker tone. I guess that’s why I woke from dark to light? Saves me time anyway.

Now that we’ve got a base for both … subjects, time to overpaint a bit. I usually just doodle over it for about three minutes. This is done with a small hard round brush, adding in brighter details on the grass and a few errant blades here and there. Some more scattered dirt is also added. Really just blend anything that looks like it’s sticking out too much.

(this dirt brush is made similarly to the grass brush with higher spacing (170%). Just start with a blob instead of a grass shape).

Next up is leaves/bushes…!
