seeing a lot of posts and tweets along the lines of “why are non-americans even invested in this/people outside of america don’t even understand our politics their opinion is invalid/non americans are ignorant about our ways” etc etc etc
here’s the thing
we may not live in america; our governments and their stance on abortion may be vastly different to the american or texan models, but this issue influences people far beyond america because like it or not, the US has made itself a superpower in the world, and through the media and globalisation american issues and struggles saturate the rest of the world and are given an equal or even greater focus by the news and by the public in many, many countries.
The American entertainment/media industry has an enormous reach and sphere of influence, far greater than any national government. If American arguments and struggles such as these don’t make it into the public awareness or aren’t given valid and widespread media coverage, what chance does any other country/political campaign/protest have?
Non-Americans may not live in the constituencies that senators like Wendy Davis come from, but we feel the effects of such fights just as keenly. And that’s why the world is invested in American politics, even though we don’t have a vote or a say in their outcome.
