Tumblr is cultivating a distinct dialect of english.
We use so many japanese words for irony, and so often that they’ve just integrated into our vocabulary. We all know what they mean and we’ve integrated them so well into the way we speak. Go out on the street and see if anyone knows what sempai, tsun-tsun, kawaii, sugoi or any of that means.
Tumblr has gradually replaced words with symbols. The dashboard link became a house. Reblog, edit, like, etc, became the symbols that we recognize. What does this have to do with language? These arelogograms. And it’s not too interesting until you consider that…
we can read this as a valid sentence. Would people who don’t use social networking know what this means? Probably not.
Tumblr is a community full of sarcasm and facetiousness. That, combined with tags that strip punctuation and capitalization, have led to a much more “higher level” comprehension of language.

Most of you could understand that just fine, without clause breaking punctuation and even with the aposiopetic phrase at the end. tumblr’s logo is even stylized to not include capitalization.
We have all our own colloquialisms. Far beyond just memes and shit like that, there are phrases that stick to all of tumblr, a lot of them derived or verbosified from other phrases. “what is air” “i’ve lost the ability to can” “it does the thing” and various others.
Basically, more reasons tumblr’s communication habits are making it the origin of a new dialect. I think it’s cool.

One of my best friends, who is also on Tumblr, studied linguistics and one day we were conversing in full-blown Tumblese and he stopped and said something along the lines of “wait what’re we doing this is basiclly no longer English.”
