ill idyll

beth-ld:

nobody would know that these creatures

in the country clubs and golf carts came fresh

out of the holocaust,

nobody would guess

when they drive a block away to the recreation center where

they walk two laps of a padded indoor track, get in their car and drive home again

nobody would blame them either, blame is cruel –

a mobile census wants to know their religion (atheist),

a mobile census that doesn’t ask where they were born (two room apartment in chicago

with children playing in the street and skinning their knees,

a drunk next door and an italian family downstairs with six children. they’d run through vacant lots and kick over garbage cans)

its like to some eyes, they exist forever in their identical homes with richly black freshly paved roads, lawn ornaments, cacti and palm trees

although it only takes half an hour’s walk to cross the edge

from this ill idyll and into the middle of nowhere,

just jump the fence at the end of the community and run to the highway. the desert is like a city, they aren’t hiding from any reality.

who could blame them?
