Forecasters warn once-in-a-generation winter storm could paralyze the Deep South

Details: http://nbcnews.to/1gkKOIG

IF YOU LIVE IN THE SOUTH AND YOU MUST BE OUT ON THE ROADS PLEASE TAKE THIS ADVICE:

– Drop your car into the lowest gear, it will help prevent spin outs
– Salt, granulated kitty litter, and sand work to create friction between your tires and the road; use them
– Shovel/brush off your car as early and often as possible; the longer you wait the heavier and icier the snow gets
– It’s probably going to be nice heavy, wet, packing snow USE YOUR KNEES NOT YOUR BACK

And by if you have to, that typically means LIFE OR DEATH.

The shitty thing is, the south is HORRENDOUSLY UNPREPARED FOR ANY SNOWFALL WHATSOEVER. Like, Yankees make fun of us for shutting down after a few snowflakes fall but you don’t understand: because we rarely get much/any snow, we don’t have any snow plows. We don’t have any stockpiles of rock salt. We don’t have snow tires or, really, snow gear IN FUCKING GENERAL. It’s sort of like if people in Tornado Alley laughed at other folks for freaking out over an F0 tornado, or if people from California laughed at other folks for freaking out over a minor earthquake. (Although, okay, we southerners totally laugh when you poor wee darlings complain about hot weather. You bbs are just too precious for this world.)

Also my heater is broken, so seriously. Fuck all y’all.

Staying warm:

-Layer up. First layer should be tight to the skin, second layer a bit looser to help trap leaked heat
-Drink warm beverages, tea, coffee, hot chocolate

For shoveling:
-If the snow is light enough you can actually use a broom to sweep it away
-I don’t recommend using a spade on your driveway, it can chip the blacktop. If you have a plastic shovel that would work better

Also: If you can get kitty litter or sand you can use that for traction on the slick snow or ice. If you’ve got a lightweight car, load your car up with as much stuff as you can, and pack it in the backseat above the tires. More weight give your car more traction as well.
