teachers!!! stop fucking making gay marriage and lgbt rights a “fun” debate topic and pretending like there aren’t actual non-straight, non-cis kids in your class that are directly affected by this shit!! like while yall are having fun flexing your fuckin debate skills we are actually getting assaulted and murdered for this shit but whatever! have ur fun!

No teachers are doing that for “fun”?? Debating is an important part of a lot of curriculums, and people tend to feel really strongly on either side of the matter. Same goes for abortion, or gun control.

It’s teachers exposing students to issues that are going on in the real world. How is that making fun of LGBTQ+ issues??

Have you ever had to sit in a classroom full of ppl telling you that you’re disgusting and subhuman and shouldn’t have the same rights as them but u can’t say anything bc ~everyone’s entitled to their opinion and it’s a Debate~

teachers, esp high school teachers, should know better and choose different fucking things to have their fun little debates about

Or, consider this, you could engage in the debate?? Seriously this is a good thing. It’s way easier to challenge something someone has said in the open than a privately held belief/prejudice. Find some empirical evidence! Find good ethos/logos/pathos arguments and use them

i’m not interested in engaging in debates abt my own rights bc they really.. shouldn’t be up for debate lmao I shouldn’t have to tell people why I deserve the same rights they have

You are the actual reason why the LGBTQ+ community doesn’t have those rights because you don’t feel the need to engage in a debate about it even though you are going to throw a fit about not having the same rights. And I bet you that there were people on both sides of that debate because I have engaged in many debates and in not one was I standing alone one it. Even if you don’t think they should be up for debate there are people who still think that gay people should have no rights so believe it or not people are going to debate about it Regardless of what you think so suck it up and if you are going to complain about it then FUCKING DO SOMETHING TO CHANGE IT!!!

blaming lgbt kids for their own oppression, nice

Human rights are not up for debate..

This is so fucking disgusting and i really hope you actually realise that what you are saying is gross and that we should have to deal with this shit because we have to debate it, no they are my right and fuck you if you think you have the right to tell me why i shouldn’t. Ive never had a debate about black rights but lets sit here and chat about how im even worse than you all used to considered them

I don’t usually do this but it needs to be said. There is a VERY large difference between debating a social issue publicly in an effort to change the views of a person/group and debating it for the sake of debating in a school environment.

Classroom debates aren’t actually about the topic at hand, they’re about teaching kids how to debate. As such, the teacher will rarely care about a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ side to it and won’t teach the kids to care either (the only thing it will teach them about the topic is that whichever side they are given – and quite often the sides of the debate are assigned at random – is the most important). This is extremely damaging when the topics are things like LGBTQ+ rights that have massive effects on people lives and have a high chance of being personal to some of the students involved.

The aim of classroom debates is to teach students how to debate. Each side is equally valid in the teacher’s eye. By itself this isn’t a problem and would work wonderfully if rather neutral-y topics were chosen (or ambiguous ones; obviously these should be tailored to classes and situations individually but you should get my point).

Basically, classroom debates with “”””fun”””” topics are designed to teach students the details and techniques of debating as a general thing and will not focus on the social consequences of whichever topic involved. Hence why debating topics such as LGBTQ+ rights in the classroom is a really bad idea because it validates the arguments and positions against such rights which is really damaging to any LGBTQ+ students participating.

Public/political/personal debates, however, are designed to change another’s point of view on a certain topic and educate them in helping continue this change in society, which is something i encourage wholeheartedly.

(another note to make: classroom debates are compulsory, students have no say in participating or not while the debates of social/political landscape are entirely optional, everyone involved has chosen to be there)
