“Syrian ‘refugees’ seen charging expensive smartphones!!!1!1!!1!111!”

Couple things:

  1. Smartphones are not that expensive, my friend bought one for, like, $40.
  2. It’s possible to own something before an emergency.
  3. Phones are really important, smartphones are basically little computers that can help with finding work, shelter, translating and more.
  4. The saddest thing about this: Most of the phones don’t even work. Most people only have the phones and keep them charged because they keep photos of loved ones on their phones. So many families are split up and people have lost loved ones and the only photos they have are on their phones. For one teen boy, the only photo of his best friend he has is on his phone and it’s of his friend’s body after their school was bombed. That’s all he has to remember him by.

So fuck you.

It’s similar to how people trash poor people for having them. Smart phones are not some indicator of wealth. People receive them as gifts. They are life lines for many people. They allow them to stay in touch with loved ones, find jobs, act as alarm clock/camera/calculator/weather forecast/radio. Having a smart phone doesn’t mean that you’re not in dire straits. Being in a bad life situation doesn’t mean that you can’t have something nice and incredibly useful in your life.
