I want RvB to get more female characters, but I want them to be characters along the lines of Kai and Jensen. Characters who are hard to take seriously, characters who are jokes.
Characters who are written in the same spirit as the male characters.
I’m tired of RvB needing to shove its females onto an unobtainable pillar of badassery. I liked Jensen when she was introduced because she was treated the same as her male counterparts. The same for Kai, though there’s plenty of argument for Kai having issues in the execution. But I don’t want RvB to keep creating female characters that are hugely powerful and feared badasses who are always taken seriously. I don’t want more Texes, or Carolinas. I want more Jensens. I want more Kais.
I would also like more Jensen and more Kai, too, mind you.
I like Tex. I adore Carolina. But Jensen and Kai felt a lot more like they were written in the spirit of RvB’s grab bag of colorful losers than either of them ever did.
I’ve been praying that this season will have an episode focused on Simmons’ squad for all these reasons.
I would adore that, I want more Katie and it would be nice for Spike to get some actual screentime and maybe a canon name that isn’t Volleyball
I’d never thought of that…
I am entirely for this.
Red vs Blue has a strong pallet of badass women. We can use more of those. But we can also use more colorful loser women.
In this case it’s less about how strong they are and more about the context they’re presented in. When we met the Reds and Blues, we were introduced to a bunch of losers, assholes, misfits, and dorks. Tex has elements of that spirit, but right from the beginning she was set apart as stronger, tougher, and better than them in every way- an unobtainable pedestal of badassery that got more unobtainable all the time.
Then Kai came along and Kai was shallow and conceited and thick and an asshole- she fit right in with the spirit of the rest of the Reds and Blues, she was like them.
Then came the Freelancer arcs and South, who was an edgy badass, and Connie, who was an angsty badass, and Carolina, who was both an edgy and an angsty badass, and of course Tex, who was The Best™. Then Chorus and Kimball, who was a badass, and Katie, who… could be a jerk if she wanted to, and was goofy and dorky and just as subject to slapstick as the others.
RvB has enough badass ladies. In the context of the kind of show RvB is, it doesn’t need more. What it needs is goofy, dorky, jerkass losers, who tell dumb jokes and are the subject of the same kind of slapstick as the Reds and Blues, who have questionable competence, who are misfits and assholes and whose primary function is to be funny.
Otherwise, it’s not really representation, it’s just another form of discrimination.
#dont forget about my love emily grey
I did forget her, thank you for reminding me! Yes, Emily is much more of the calibre of ladies I want to see more of.
