lgbt historical anecdote:

The VICTORY OVER AIDS flag, proposed in the mid 1980s, adds a black stripe to the familiar rainbow to commemorate those we have lost to AIDS. Sergeant Leonard Matlovich, a decorated Vietnam veteran and activist who passed of an AIDS-related illness in 1988, developed the idea. He also suggested that when a cure is found all the black stripes be removed, taken to Washington D.C, and burned in a poignant ceremony.
