Every time I see someone shitting on people for watching dubs my lifespan decreases by 10 years. And this is coming from someone who speaks Japanese, ok

Reasons people might want to watch an anime dubbed:

  • They genuinely enjoy it, which is perfectly fine!
  • They can emotionally connect more easily when dialogue is in their native language, or in the case of comedy anime, comedic impact is often lost somewhat when in Japanese to a non-Japanese speaker
  • Their favorite voice actor is in it, or they just like the voices
  • They find one or more of the Japanese voices unbearable
  • They want to laugh at a poorly done dub
  • They want to support the companies that dub anime so that they see there is a demand for anime in the western market
  • They have difficulty following subs, like MAYBE THEY HAVE A LEARNING DISABILITY THAT AFFECTS THAT WHY DOES NOBODY EVER THINK OF THIS

Yes, some anime dubs are really bad, but there are also some out there that are perfectly good. And either way, there are multiple reasons people might want to watch dubs.

There is nothing wrong with watching anime dubs, and watching a dub does not make someone any less of a fan. You do not get to act like a pretentious prick and shame people for watching dubs just because you want to fuck Aya Hirano or have a bone to pick with Troy Baker or something. Don’t be an ass.

One more point, lots of people have difficulty reading emotion from tone, and a lot of voice tone in Japanese is at least unfamiliar enough to English speakers that they feel like they’re missing out on the intensity of some scenes because they can’t read the tone.

Also a good point!

Also Dub actors work their ASSES off, especially at FUNIMATION. Right now the whole simuldub contract is causing VA to dub a shit ton of shows at once. Some actors have had to take off seasons to rest their voices because they are working so much.

My voice acting teacher is a casting director and VA at funimation (and recently Aaron Dismuke asked her to assistant ADR direct for Nanbaka) and she does a lot of hard work. Not only that but she’s hella talented. I also have some friends that work there. They don’t get paid all that much and they really do put a lot of effort into their work, people have to give them at least some respect for that.

Even if you don’t watch dubs, please be respectful to dubbers and do not attack them. Please.

-A voice actress aspiring to dub anime one day

Yeah, that’s another good point! I have a friend who’s done voice acting work, too, and it’s really impressive and hard work.

I might not like every voice actor personally, but I definitely have a lot of respect for voice actors in general.
