It annoys me how common a sci-fi plot “get X(often a woman/woman-coded synthetic) to The Scientists so they can create a cure/vaccine, but then it turns out they have to kill/disassemble X to do it” Is. Like, I’m no scientist or doctor merely a humble internet-snake, but that’s not how vaccines work. Killing the only person who either produces antibodies effective against The Plague, or whose body and history could provide clues to treating it, is literally the last thing you would do.
EDIT 1: No, wait, it is not “the last thing you would do”; you would just literally never do that. Like, what the hell are you thinking? “We’ve got to take out her Brain/HD to Create The Cure/Extract The Antiapocalypse Equation” No you don’t you idiot get a syringe/Thumb drive and put the hacksaw down >:(
It would be nice if there were a trilogy or something where first book is get ms. mcguffin to scientists, second book is ms. mcguffin safe with scientists while ragtag squad is still outside being roughed up by the apocalypse, and third book ties up the increasing tension and unhappiness of ms. mcguffin by having her, rightly or wrongly, escape from the scientists and attempt to meet back up with ragtag squad, even though literally no one asked for her to do this, but she’s not the sort of person who can handle being kept mewed up safe while her nascent World’s Revolution Squad Of Heroes scatters to the four winds and obscurity without her.
Because then all sorts of characters get a little bit of what they want, and a little bit thwarted, and a lot pissed off at one another, AND the scientists get plenty of samples to be getting on with.

This time it was techguy Jansen, originally Scienceguy Jansen but No, they said, Not Scienceguy, he doesn’t have this thing from Back Then that you need to be a Scienceguy, somesuch DoctorIt or something, so he’s not a Doctor so he’s not a Scienceguy. No It means No Doctor means Lab Technician ergo techguy. The lowercase is important for Hierarchy.

AAAAaannyway, techguy Jansen’s alright, better than others not so great as others. All Right. He has a first name of course like everyone here, Inside, Zeek, which is short for something he won’t say and gets flustered about when she asks other people about it which is Humorous but unfortunately it’s just the two of them here in the lab today now so teasing was No Dice. AAAaannnddd…. shestillwasn’treallyusetothewhole: First Name Thing. They did things different Out There; Lastname, Placename, Madename, favorite Backthing, Whatever, any Nick or Pseud you(or others) wanted so long’s you answered to it. So long’s it wasn’t You.

YEAH! EXACTLY, SEE? No one is terrible, no one is wrong for no reason who shouldn’t be. There’s plenty of tension and heartbreak without wasting time show-and-telling about a bunch of worthless enemy idiots whose motives make no sense!
