there’s so much cool stuff going on on the internet. the art is so great. i love it. people are doing stuff that’s so, so incredible. im love it

one of the central things, i think, which is different between contemporary art and internet culture art, is that internet culture art is not necessarily about something in the way contemporary art is. “what are the themes in this artwork” uhhhh, i dunno, its a cool rosemary pic. its got some nice symbolism and they love each other and it’s a tarot card kinda thing. whereas contemporary art is like, this artwork is a response to post-911 america, military and surveillance, and anonymity on the internet. those are different things i feel like. not just like subject matter, but like… maybe one’s more political? trying to change ur mind about somehting? im not sure. i think i like art in internet culture more, it’s absolutely, definitely less pretentious. also just imo it mostly looks better, but that’s not really a valid criticism? 

art in internet culture is peers. making art w each other. you make art bc you see people just like you making art. maybe it’s kinda similar to youtubers? like the way people like/relate to them is different to, say, famous actors. even tho they can have the same or more fame, it feels different. and just like there are a ton of people making videos that get 100 views, there are people making art that gets 2 notes. or no notes. but you still make it. like, i think it’s not really a thing to go to an art gallery and then be like “huh i want to paint now” like that would be rare. idk. ALSO there’s so much bad art. im not being rude here, i love that there’s so much art that’s not good. its what gets people to make art i think. seeing other people at the same skill level as you also making stuff. love it.

another thing im finding is like. im getting a lot more results if i look for “fanart” rather than “internet art”. but im not just looking for fanart?? everyone’s got ocs. that’s a big part of the culture here!! and like, webcomics and stuff. fanart is a big huge thing and all, but it’s not all fanart. i want to find out about the other stuff as well. (also im not just looking for digital art. u can do nothing but watercolours and still be creating art in internet culture)
