I swear 17th Century continental philosophers spent twice as much time trying to manipulate each other into assenting to blasphemy as they did substantively advancing their own theses. It’s like reading a web forum where everybody has decided that the best way to win arguments is to trick your opponent into doing something that’s technically against the site’s terms of service, then run and tell the moderators.

“If God is infinitely merciful, do you think He could forgive Satan’s transgressions?”

“I suppose so, given the right–”

“You think Satan is worthy of redemption! I’m telling!”

“You doubt God’s omnipotence and mercy! I’m telling!”
