…You know. Considering how this has been spreading on the internet since mid-October, ANACOM (Portuguese Authority/Regulation on Comunications) and the EU would have gone after the Portuguese provider by now if they were really doing something this* illegal…
It’s only a packaging plan that allows you to spend almost 5 extra euros on a group of apps so that you don’t have to use those apps while using your own internet data. By your choice.
If you don’t want this, the provider does give other choices/services, packages and prices for your needs.
You see that “plus” right next to Smart Net? This is basically an extra for the original package which has 10 GB a month.
That’s it.
*this provider is very notorious in terms of “adding” packages or payed bonus without the client(s) asking. Sometimes, it’s a legit accident. Other times… well…
at this point i don’t know what more we can tell them
You know what’s funny amidst all this
Service providers in Portugal actually do illegal shit like charging extra to make up for the end of roaming and force you on 2 year contracts, although it’s against EU regulations. But this isn’t one of them.
MEO is notorious for creating new packages and forcing their customers to pay extra unless they call and have it cancelled, like the OP mentioned. Consider this as well: it was just bought by a french multinational whose director bragged in an interview that he will do whatever he can to have people work as much as they can for the least amount of money possible. So there you go.
So there is a lot about consumer rights that we could use to burn down Meo (they were my provider for a few years and nearly everyone around me uses them).
But the one thing they’re crucifying them for is the one thing that’s plain wrong lmao
Please don’t spread this anymore. As the OP said, this is merely an extra 5€ package that allows you to use a cluster of apps without spending your monthly data. That’s it. That’s not about net neutrality. We have net neutrality. I know it’s attractive to say that this is a consequence of the end of net neutrality but it’s not, it’s really the consequence of capitalism and unregulated business providers. It’s really a case of consumer rights. But NOT of net neutrality. Please. We have enough net neutrality for semi-naked shepherds to be trending right now.
i changed the goddamn image and wrote them a short note explaining why the image was misappropriated
