enchantedengland: Stainborough Castle is believed to to be the second oldest Gothic garden folly in the country; part of the Wentworth Castle estate in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.

Built between 1727-1730 on the highest part of the estate, the folly was used by the 1st Earl of Strafford and his family as a play area and for picnicking. The four towers were named each of his four children: Harriet, Anne, Lucy, and William. The area within the walls of the towers was grassed, and the inside of each painted a different colour.
