Homestuck Ships by number of works on Ao3

Here’s a single image with the grids merged, and a spreadsheet with the underlying data. Each entry represents the number of works with the ship between the character in the row’s label and the character in the column’s label.

Inspired by @curlicuecal‘s posts about Homestuck ships on Ao3 I decided to make a grid of my own, showing how many works there are for each of the 595 possible ships among the 34 Sburb-playing characters (8 kids, 24 trolls, 2 cherubs, and including self-ships because it’s Homestuck). I do tend to like rarepairs so I was especially curious to see which ships had little or no content for them.

[Details of the data: the numbers were drawn from the number of works claimed at the top of Ao3′s canonical tag for the pairing with a slash and not an ampersand (e.g. http://archiveofourown.org/tags/Roxy%20Lalonde*s*Nepeta%20Leijon/works), on the morning of June 8 2017.]

Aaaaah I love it. And HEAT MAPS what a great way to graphically represent this data. (I still have my numbers for all the ships whenever ago, I wonder if we could do something interesting with percentage change to see how popularity has shifted.)

Bless you for making this. :33

KARKAT: IN MY MIND’S EYE I AM PICTURING A BEAUTIFUL LATTICE OF LINES AND COMPARTMENTS, INTERLOCKING WITH SUBLIME PRECISION AT NINETY DEGREE ANGLES.

KARKAT: I IMAGINE THIS MODULAR RETICULATION AS AN ELEGANT VESSEL, IF YOU WILL, FOR THE GRAND SYNTHESIS OF OUR SHARED SHIPPING DREAMS.
