pokemonstadiumtwo:

“exposing people to triggers is a real therapy choice” yes ERP (exposure and response prevention) therapy is a very real technique that ive used myself and is often used with disorders like ocd BUT it almost has to be administered by a professional or at the very least with the awareness of the patient before the fact, as it’s EXTREMELY DISTRESSING and basically anyone who has experience initiating it or using it will tell you this!! an article in psychology today, while discussing how helpful it is, describes it as “among the cruellest and most agonizing procedures in all of psychotherapy”

so no, forcing people to face things that give them emotional distress/trigger mental disorders isn’t “therapeutic” or “good for them” unless its in very specific circumstances–my therapist insisted on waiting weeks before we even broached ERP for my most severe triggers, because she didn’t want to do things wrong and cause MORE damage
