Split Fanon Syndrome is a term that I’m coining right now to refer to multifaceted characters whose personalities are interpreted in two or more distinct ways by fandom. When this happens, the people in each camp will accuse the other camp’s interpretation of being the “Fanon” version of a character, while their interpretation is the “Canon” version. In reality, though, both camps are correct, because a character can, in fact, exhibit multiple, different traits.

Notable examples of characters who suffer from Split Fanon Syndrome are Nepeta from Homestuck (innocent kitty girl | apex predator), and Sans from Undertale (angstlord mcpowerful | punman mcjoke). In reality, both of these characters exhibit both sets of personality traits, as they are complex characters.

Is the dress white and gold? Or black and blue?
Doesn’t matter! Perception!
