HOSPITALS. ARE. ALREADY. REQUIRED. UNDER. LAW. TO. PROVIDE. LIFE. SAVING. EMERGENCY. CARE. REGARDLESS. OF. ABILITY. TO. PAY. OR. EVEN. CITIZENSHIP.

Stop acting like Americans have no access to emergency healthcare unless we socialize medicine.

IF. YOU. GO. AND. CAN’T. PAY. YOU’RE. STILL. THOUSANDS. IN. DEBT. THIS. IS. NOT. ACCESS.

um i’m not from the US but I’ve heard of people being told to leave emergency depts cos they didn’t take their insurance and having severe complications and even dying cos they didn’t reach the other hospital in time . .

You heard right.

Emergency Medical Treatment & Labor Act (EMTALA) ‘requires anyone coming to an emergency department to be stabilized and treated, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay’.

But here’s the kicker: since its enactment in 1986 it’s unfunded. Also, EMTALA only applies to hospitals receiving Medicare funds. ‘Stabilized and treated’ means they can dump you after they give you the barest of care, just enough so they can legally prove you weren’t in danger of dying.

This country is a fucking nightmare for the sick.
