Take notice of how the media is reporting on the #SydneySiege as a tragic event that has touched the whole nation in contrast to the way it’s reporting on the #CairnsTragedy as just another personal tragedy. No expert views and no rolling coverage. Just 8 dead children. The media coverage of white deaths and Black deaths in this country is very different. Always be critical and aware.

Obviously you need to watch ABC News. This morning they broadcast about 15 minutes of live coverage of mourners, and allowed the footage to just play out in real time out of respect to those affected. Rather than talking over it and editing it for dramatic effect.

Here’s where you’re wrong. ABC News was broadcasting Sorry Business. They and other news services continue to do so. You do NOT broadcast that on national TV. The family and friends of the deceased children have asked specifically for the public and media to respect cultural protocols. That’s not what has been happening in the media coverage of this tragedy. For example, whilst the family and friends were walking down Murray Street, visibly distressed and filled with emotion, they had cameras in their faces filming and photographing every moment of their mourning process. That, for anyone, is disrespectful and unnecessary.

You also have the Courier Mail honing in on the fact that the mother of 7 of the children had kids with five men, The South Australian Advertiser publishing blurred out photos of the deceased children (not linking for obvious reasons) AND naming them all, and the Herald Sun calling the #CairnsTragedy a "Massacre in Cairns" on the front page of their newspaper. Did this stuff happen with the #SydneySiege? No. The wishes of the grieving family and friends of the deceased were respected. The media coverage of the #CairnsTragedy is undeniably different to the #SydneySiege coverage. Period.

Try again.
