I find it really sad how unrecognized the Bisexual Pride flag is.

Everyone knows the Rainbow flag. It’s unambiguous and instantly recognizable.

But the Blue, Purple, and Pink? I’ve met fellow bisexuals who didn’t even recognize it. My mother, upon seeing my bisexual flag bumper sticker asked me “why is that rainbow flag missing a bunch of the colors?”

And I just….the bisexual flag is so damn pretty! And Bisexuals are so fucking important.

I just…yeah.

Shout out to the Bi Pride colors.

I love the bi pride flag, and I actually understand it. Pink for the attraction to girls, blue for the attraction to guys and purple for both. I never really understood why gay pride is a rainbow.

^ I can’t ever resist reblogging bi pride, but that explanation goes by the shitty assumption that bisexuals are transphobic/binarist. The true meaning of bisexuality is the potential to be attracted to people of the same gender, and of different genders. Because there’s more out there than just men and women!

I think a better explanation for our colors might be pink for attraction to women, blue for attraction to men, and purple for attraction to other genders?

While that explanation is certainly better, it isn’t the one I’ve heard.

Michael Page, who designed the flag in 1998, describes the meaning of the flag as this: “The pink color represents sexual attraction to the same sex only (gay and lesbian), The blue represents sexual attraction to the opposite sex only (straight) and the resultant overlap color purple represents sexual attraction to both sexes (bi).”

I’m not super fond of the wording there (mostly the use of “opposite sex”) so I think the best way to explain it is thus:

  • Pink = Potential attraction to similar genders
  • Blue = Potential attraction to different genders
  • Purple = Potential attraction to both of these.
