When assessing candidates for their suitability for election, one would generally look at things such as talent, intelligence, or general ability.

According to Tony Abbott however, the most notable and significant traits in a woman running for office are being “young” and having “sex appeal,“ as he remarked today when out promoting the Liberal Party candidate for Lindsay, Fiona Scott.

Liberal Party supporters and apologists are quick to label any instance of Abbott speaking his mind a “gaffe”, but this latest remark simply joins a long, long line of sexist comments made by the leader of the opposition.

Among a host of other sexist remarks, Abbott has previously also stated that women “lack the aptitudes and abilities” for power “because of physiological reasons.” Every time Abbott says something that isn’t scripted, he demonstrates that he is severely out of touch with attitudes of modern times.

It is abundantly clear that this man doesn’t see anything wrong with defining women by their physical traits, and I for one am seriously offended by Mr Abbott’s inability to see us past our bodies and instead for our brains.

the man that could be the leader of our nation in less than a month today said in a public statement regarding the current prime minister that

“No one, however smart, however well educated, however experienced, is the suppository of all wisdom.”
