Today India criminalized homosexuality. Upholding a ridiculous piece of legislation from the 19th fucking century, our Supreme Court has made the lifestyles of millions of Indians, including mine, illegal. In a country where marital rape in legal, and rape carries a prison sentence of 7 years, consensual sex between individuals of the same gender amounts to a minimum of 10 years in prison. The Supreme Court, which is supposed to protect the rights of minorities from the majority-controlled legislature, has conveniently handed the baton over to India’s decrepit Parliament, which spends more time hurling furniture across party lines than it does making laws.
The revival of this disgusting, colonial law has made a criminal of me and millions of others. For a nation which cannot stop emphasizing equality in its constitution, it’s doing a fucked up job of preserving it.
