THIS IS IMPORTANT aka what has been happening in Colorado for the last week.

wideawakeandhalfasleep:

Usually when there is a natural disaster, tumblr is all over it spreading awareness and yet I have yet to see a single post on my dash about what has been happening here in Colorado for the last week.

For those of you unaware, Colorado was pounded by several days of heavy rain last week which resulted in mass floods across the state. Whole stretches of roads and highways were washed out by overflowing rivers and thousands of people lost their homes and all of their belongings. Entire towns have been completely cut off and are only accessible by air. Since they couldn’t get in while the storms were still happening, in the last couple of days a fleet of military helicopters has been hard at work evacuating those that have been stranded since last week when the flooding began (often without electricity and safe water). The rain may have stopped but it will be a while before everything goes back to normal here in Colorado.

I could type out pages about the devastation these storms have brought, but I’ll make this easy for you, here are some links to educate yourselves.

  • HuffPost has a good overview of the damage by numbers here.
  • However, their numbers regarding deaths/missing persons are already becoming outdated as rescue/clean up efforts continue, in which case The Denver Post is your best bet for updated information on that.
  • Information on how to help the flood victims can be found here.
  • As with any natural disaster, rumors can spread quickly as people desperately search for information. Here is a list of some of those rumors which have been debunked.
  • List of local Colorado news outlets for more information: 9News, The Denver Channel, Colorado’s Own Channel 2, CBS 4 Denver, The Denver Post
