AND THE INTERESTING TANGENT THAT I DIDN’T ADDRESS IN THAT POST IS: the Director had every ability to actually prevent the AI from talking to each other by using a program imperative, but instead he told them protocol disallowed it and expected them to abide by that. The absolute silliness of this leads me to believe that this was another of his experiments (CHURCH. IT’S NOT SCIENCE IF THERE’S NO CONTROL. GET THE FUCK WITH IT) and he was curious what would happen if they interacted.

Were there psych profiles on the AI fragments if not Alpha and Beta? SAKES ALIVE, CHURCH, HOW CAN YOU COUNTENANCE RUNNING AN EXPERIMENT WITHOUT PROPER DOCUMENTATION. STOP THIS AT ONCE.

But given this, I wonder how many variables he actually failed to account for, to quote Delta’s exposition. Certainly Delta is capable of this level of logical deduction, which is much less impressive than predicting someone’s behaviour down to the timing of their responses, even if that person is himself.

“CHURCH. IT’S NOT SCIENCE IF THERE’S NO CONTROL.” Ah. That sums up Project Freelancer so well. :’)

In all seriousness though, yeah, I think Church was curious. I think Church had sort of a terrible curiosity about what would happen under certain circumstances while at the same time being quite capable of forming a reasonable hypothesis that the outcome would be bad, very bad. So he disallows the thing, but does not actually prevent the thing, so that when the thing inevitably does happen, he has both observable phenomena and plausible deniability.

BUT CHURCH. CONTROLS.

And this is where Church starts going off the rails into Mad Scientist territory, I think, (not in the mentally ill sense, just in the TV Tropes sense) because what distinguishes a Mad Scientist from a Scientist Scientist is not just the lack of ethics but the lack of controls, the actual bad science. And Church is a manipulator, with an ego bigger than Texas, and with the Counselor and his profiles he sort of moves things into place and watches what happens, all the while categorizing this in his head as Science when it’s not even that, convincing himself that he’s got everything in hand when he doesn’t.

Maybe the Counselor even came into this thing thinking they were doing real science, but when he says, “Protocol,” the Director just says, “Shut up, Counselor.”
